8/2 -German Volume Training (Squats)
One of the best ways to get good at something, is to do it a lot, and to do it well. To put in the deposits of effort with reps and reps. One movement that definitely requires a significant amount of practice is a squat. German Volume Training (or GVT) offers a way of getting in a ton of practice that is simultaneously incredibly challenging. It is one of the many ways to increase work capacity, strength and muscle size. This type of training is not for the faint of heart, but there is much rewards to reap for those who choose to engage and attempt.
I have been doing GVT for my squats (10 sets of 10) once a week for the last month. Last week I was only able to complete 7 sets with 135, and fialed on the 8th set. Today I was able to complete 8 sets. Same as last week, the last 2 sets I dropped down to 130, and I was able to finish those as well.
Could I have tried to do all 10 sets with 135? Yes. Would it have been a good idea? Probably not. Reasons being are because I failed a bit before the full set scheme (set 8) and prior session I also failed the last set with the 130s. Yes the goal is always to do the most you can, the goal is also to do so in a sustainable manner. Today I did 6 more total reps than prior, thats already a good amount of additional volume.
